Sausage Gravy


Homemade Sausage Gravy is perfect over hot buttermilk biscuits for a classic Southern breakfast or brunch.


How To Make Sausage Gravy:

Ingredients:
  • Bulk breakfast sausage
  • Flour 
  • Milk
  • Salt
  • Black Pepper
Equipment:
  • Cast iron or stainless steel skillet
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cup
Directions:
  • Cook the sausage patties and set aside
  • Whisk the flour into the grease in the skillet
  • Cook for 2-3 minutes
  • Add the milk whisking well
  • Cook the gravy until thickened
  • Add crumbled sausage to gravy
  • Season to taste with salt and pepper

  • 1 Pound breakfast sausage
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 2-3 cups milk
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste
  • 1/4-1/3 cup water if needed
Instructions:
  1. Form the sausage into patties
  2. Cook in a large skillet over medium heat for 6 minutes on each side or until cooked through. *if the sausage is browning too quickly add a little bit of water and cover. The steam will help the sausage cook through without burning
  3. Once the sausage is cooked through remove from the skillet and set aside
  4. There should be roughly 4 Tablespoons of fat left in the skillet
  5. Sprinkle with the flour and whisk
  6. Cook the fat and flour for 2-3 minutes
  7. Whisk 2 cups of the milk into the roux in batches
  8. Once the 2 cups of milk has been whisked take some of the sauage and crumble it and add it to the gravy
  9. Cook the gravy for 5-10 minutes or until thickened
  10. Season with salt and pepper to taste
  11. Serve over buttermilk biscuits
